Despite our bias to avoiding failure, it’s one of the most powerful teachers in real life and in games. In this 75-minute fun workshop, we’ll turn that dreaded “game over” screen into a tool to level up—whether you’re an Agile pro or just learning what “iteration” means. Whether navigating a tough problem or a tough level in your favorite game, this workshop will give you tools to turn “game over” into “game on!” by…FAILING!
Using simple game design principles, we’ll learn five ways to build failure into our lives as a tool for success. Through interactive activities, you’ll design your own failure-positive game, while discovering how Agile methods can turn obstacles into opportunities. Join for a fun, hands-on session where failure is celebrated, and you walk away with usable tools for life, work, and play. Plus, there might be some doodling involved—no gaming experience needed!

Cognitive Domain: Remembering & Understanding
Participants identify the role of failure as a positive force in both video game design and Agile processes by analyzing relatable examples (e.g., Super Mario Bros, relatable video game character attributes, or workplace challenges).
2. Create a failure-positive game concept by applying basic game design principles and Agile values.
Cognitive Domain: Applying & Creating
Participants construct a simple game concept incorporating failure as a core mechanic by translating rules, challenges, and feedback loops from their own team experiences or personal values.
3. Evaluate their game design through iterative feedback and collaboration, reflecting on parallels to team dynamics at work and their own agile journey.
Cognitive Domain: Evaluating & Analyzing
Participants critique and refine their game concept using feedback from peers, drawing connections between Agile methods (e.g., sprints, feedback loops) and team collaboration.
