I came back from maternity leave as Scrum Master in May 2022. Month 3 of the all-out war in Ukraine. At that time Simcorp - a Danish Fintech company with about 250 employees in Ukraine - was doing a tremendous job to make sure the company survived. Despite the enormous support on a personal level, the huge gap in living conditions in cross located teams made it more and more difficult to talk about uncomfortable topics and challenges, to find words without hurting each other's feelings. In my experience report, I'd like to describe the steps I took to coach my teams into new ways of interacting during such a crisis, as well as describe tools and approaches that worked well and that didn't bring the expected results. The biggest achievement was getting multiple teams in different locations to support each other, listen to each other, and acknowledge the different conditions in which we all find ourselves. I believe that developing such skills and practices makes a business, a team, ready for any crisis and challenge that the modern world throws our way.
