Slicing the Elephant: Scaled Agile Hierarchical Architecture-Based Delivery
Description

As an agile practitioner since 1999, leading increasingly larger programs, I have adopted a Scaled Agile Hierarchical Architecture-Based Delivery approach to allow for long-term planning that evolves while at the same time providing concrete short-term immediate steps. Particularly in large corporate organisations it is important to have an end-to-end view of the data flows as they can impact the final solution. The architecture evolves while focusing on the minimal viable business value increment, thus allowing immediate progress in parallel with developing the long-term goals. The architecture in a complex global organisation is described in a hierarchical manner, and is reflected in a hierarchically-structured backlog. This allows for a flexible and agile implementation approach, focusing on the most important items first, being flexible with the planning of subsequent iterations, and providing an overview that enables drilling down into the details. It is suitable to cross-value stream implementations, bringing together the various teams in one holistic view. This approach has been applied successfully to three programs, a scaled agile approach that is transparent on many levels of granularity, evolving and applicable to large cross-value stream programs.
