Name
Working with Team Conflict: Don't Go Too Deep Too Soon (Paul Tevis)
Description

Conflict is a natural part of working together as a team. When conflict is not handled effectively, however, it pulls the team's attention and energy away from the task at hand. Unfortunately, people are prone to misdiagnosing the sources of conflict within a group, and as a result, they often apply the wrong solutions. This session presents a model and principles for identifying the most likely means of addressing conflicts in ways that the team will actually accept.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss their skills, comfort, and confidence in navigating group conflict.
  • Explore four levels of "depth" where the source of a conflict might reside (Structure / Dynamics / Interpersonal / Intrapersonal).
  • Identify their default/preferred level of depth for working with a conflict.
  • Apply two principles for choosing a level of depth.
  • Analyze a past situation to develop alternative diagnoses and responses.
