Orbiting around the Sun at nearly a million miles from Earth, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will open up new expanses of the near and distant universe. Webb's infrared-detecting gaze will penetrate clouds of dust and reach back in space and time to view the very formation of the universe itself. So how do you prepare to support the worldwide community of astronomers for something that's literally 'out of this world'? Simply put, through agility and adaptability. Join this session to discuss the importance of an agile culture and learn how the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) provides the Mission and Science Operations for the largest, most powerful, and most complex space-based telescope ever built. You will walk away from this session seeing some extraordinary images from space and learning how a cross-disciplinary team of thousands successfully deployed one of the most ambitious scientific endeavors since humans started to look up and wonder. We’ll share our journey of how STScI applied agile principles and frameworks to create the “flow” needed to support the Mission Operations Center, Flight Operations Systems, and the incredible technical and science Staff who will be running JWST. Finally, we’ll reveal our successes and challenges using Agile, what worked well, and what didn't. We are not a perfect Agile framework organization, but we are iteratively becoming better!
