How I Fell in Love with Compliance
Anko Tijman
Description

As a ScrumMaster I've started valuing compliance more and more along my journey. I know from experience that many agile team members consider it an unsettling topic. Compliance has this perception of top-down control and it doesn't seem to align with Agile values such as inspect & adapt. Being a former software tester, it felt quite off to me that something so important for organizations, didn't seem to be valuable to the Agile community. Because isn't compliance a missing feedback loop, like software testing was 15 years ago in Agile? To me, the answer to that is: yes! So I dived into the subject and came to understand, among other things: • Compliance is everywhere and it's not always a bad thing: for instance, being compliant to traffic rules. • Agile teams and compliance officers often mean the same but use different words, which primarily causes this tension. Example: transparency and reporting have quite a lot in common. • Agile teams excel at avoiding risks (by slicing, MVP, inspect & adapt) which is a great resource and add-on for compliance professionals • Some compliance practices that focus on thinking-before-doing are great additions to the agile nature of rapid learning So, I've learned that there is value in both the Agile way of working and thinking like a compliance professional. I've become a vigorous ambassador on this. Join my talk and let me nudge you out of your Agile comfort zone!
